When you are looking at flats to rent you want to make sure that you are getting your moneys worth. You should be happy in your chosen flat; you don't want to be handing out large sums of money each month if you aren't satisfied with your home. If you've taken the right steps then there should be no reason for you not to enjoy your home.
It is important that you ask the right questions and all the important questions. Write all these down as it is easy to forget and a beautiful flat can mean emotions can get the better of you. The questions you need to answer are:
How is the neighbourhood? What types of people live there?
Is the area quiet or noisy?
Are you close to amenities and schools if appropriate and the local transport links?
Do you feel that you would be comfortable there?
Is the property in good condition and have the essentials? Poorly looked after properties can reflect the attitudes of a landlord however small faults give you bargaining power to reduce the rent should you wish to take the property.
Is the rent being asked for a fair rate?
If parking is required is it easy?
How much is council tax? This is a major bill and if you or you and a partner are renting on your own then this can make the property non-viable. Some locations will have council tax amounts in excess of £200.
Once you have found that ideal property then visit it at least one more time to make sure the surrounding area is good (i.e. no noisy neighbours). Visit a favoured property to rent at a different time of day in order to get the best idea of how the area is, especially in the evening.
There are many flat for rent in the current economic climate so do visit at least three properties. Not only can you can compare standards but prices too and if you are brave do a little bargaining with the landlord or agency.
